Because of budget cuts - Wednesday is the last day on the job for more than 200 people employed by Contra Costa County.

Among the people losing their jobs are 14 elder abuse social workers and 65 child welfare workers.

Starting Thursday, there will be just five social workers on staff to investigate reports of elder abuse.

County supervisors approved the layoffs earlier this month to reduce the budget by about $18 million. County officials warn that more budget cuts are possible in February as they try to close a deficit estimated at $28 million.
