The U.S. Coast Guard is warning beachgoers and boaters to use extra caution along the coast, with winds up to 40-miles-an-hour and waves as high as 15-feet forecast through Tuesday night.

The alert follows the death of a 48-year-old San Francisco man at Ocean Beach on Sunday. He drowned after being pulled under by a strong rip current.

The Coast Guard says large waves and strong currents can suddenly sweep even the strongest swimmers out to sea.

Small boats are also being asked to stay out of the water until the larger waves subside.
