Jeffrey Owen Smith, who is currently in San Mateo County jail after being convicted for a Nov. 18, 2008 robbery in Menlo Park, was charged with attempted robbery in an incident in Palo Alto that occurred earlier on Nov. 18, according to police.

Smith has also been charged with robberies of lone women in Palo Alto on Nov. 15, Oct. 5, Sept. 10, and Sept. 8, police said. He was also charged with possession of stolen property, based on evidence found during a search of his home on Nov. 19.

Many of the robberies occurred near the two Caltrain stations in Palo Alto on California Avenue and University Avenue, according to police.

Palo Alto police worked with transit police from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office during the investigation.
