Fatal shooting turns into fatal pursuit

It began before 7:00 p.m. Saturday night in Berkeley where a man was shot to death at Allston Way and 8th Street. Berkeley police started chasing a with four suspects inside.

The chase ended seven miles away in Oakland when the Cadillac slammed into another car at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Aileen Street. The driver of the second car, a 26-year-old Sunnyvale resident, and a 41-year-old pedestrian from Berkeley were both killed.

Two injured suspects were immediately arrested including the 22-year-old driver from San Leandro. Two other suspects got out and ran away. They were last seen hopping backyard fences. Hours later a SWAT team moved in and started searching the neighborhood.

"Of course we're very concerned that the two suspects that jumped out of the car might still be armed," said Berkeley Police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

Neighbors were told to stay inside with doors and windows shut while the SWAT team searched for the two suspects who got away.
