Edward John Schaefer, 43, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Marin County Superior Court for murder, DUI, mayhem and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and with gross negligence. He is being held under no bail.

Schaefer has six prior DUI convictions, according to the Marin County District Attorney's Office.

Novato police said Schaefer was driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle while intoxicated on San Marin Drive in Novato around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday when he struck 9-year-old Melody Osheroff and her father, Aaron Osheroff, 41, both of Novato.

The father and daughter were crossing San Marin Drive at San Carlos Way in a crosswalk when they were hit. Novato police said Schaefer was speeding and drove through a stop sign.

Melody Osheroff died the next day at Children's Hospital in Oakland and Aaron Osheroff remains in Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Authorities said one of his legs was amputated. The mayhem charge against Schaefer relates to the loss of Aaron Osheroff's leg.

Schaefer suffered moderate injuries in crash and was treated at Marin General Hospital before he was transferred to the jail late this morning.
