Collins, 52, probably heard the Capitol Corridor train blowing its horn for him to get off the railroad at Gilman Street around 10:45 a.m., but mistook it for a slow-moving freight train on a parallel set of tracks, according to the coroner's bureau.

Capitol Corridor train No. 729 struck him while it was traveling around 79 mph, said Karina Romero, a spokeswoman for Caltrain, which operates Capitol Corridor.
