The suspect, Richard Lindsey III, 18, is in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, Sgt. Kevin Bartlett said in a news release late Sunday night.
Vallejo and Benicia police went to a home in the 200 block of Scenic Drive in Vallejo with an arrest warrant at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, Bartlett said.
Detectives located Lindsey and called for him to come out of the house and surrender, Bartlett said.
While in front of the house, Lindsey drew a replica handgun and leveled it at officers, Bartlett said. Fearing for their safety, officers shot Lindsey multiple times, Bartlett said.
Lindsey and Kalasa Isumu, 20, are suspects in the Feb. 23, 2008 murder of Mark Anthony Harris, Benicia and Vallejo police said. Isumu is suspected of fatally shooting Harris and Lindsey drove the getaway car, Benicia police said.
Isumu met Wednesday with detectives at the Vallejo Police Department and was arrested without incident, police said.
Harris was shot after an 18th birthday party at the Benicia Armory in the 700 block of Hillcrest Avenue, Benicia police said. The party was attended by about 300 people and was chaperoned by adults.
Police were called at 10:11 p.m. to break up a crowd that had gathered in the parking lot. The crowd left and the party continued inside the Armory, police said.
Benicia police returned to the Armory when gunshots were reported at 11:13 p.m. They arrived to find a large and unruly crowd, and called the Solano County Sheriff's Office and police from Vallejo and Martinez for assistance.
As police shut down the party and responded to fights in the area, additional shots were reported at the intersection of Hillcrest Avenue and East Fifth Street. Police found Harris on El Bonito Avenue, a short distance north of Hillcrest Avenue.
Harris, a Vallejo resident and Hogan High School student, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Solano County coroner's office.
"These types of violent crimes are rare for our city and we place the highest priority on apprehending those responsible," Benicia Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli said in a statement.
