Investigators were hoping to get a better idea of what caused that big Muni metro crash from surveillance cameras inside the trains. But it turns out those cameras were not working in either of the two trains involved.

The outside cameras at the West Portal Station showed several different angles of the exact moment the crash happened, injuring nearly 50 people on July 18.

But according to the San Francisco Chronicle, Muni officials confirm the cameras don't work inside 20 or so light rail vehicles.

They were purchased from an Italian company back in the 1990's. Muni officials blame a contracting problem. But some senior transit managers are furious the cameras were never fixed.
