Roger McComb, 46, called 911 from his home on Rutherford Lane just outside Martinez. When officers arrived, he was standing at the top of the stairwell with a knife. Officials say he was despondent and refused repeated orders to drop his weapon.
"When he neared the bottom of it, he accelerated his pace toward the deputy as the deputy continued to retreat, the deputy in self defense of his own life fired several shots, striking the suspect, who then went to the ground," says Captain Daniel Terry, Sheriff's Department.
Officials say McComb had duct taped the knife to his wrist and had written what appears to be a suicide note. The two deputies have been placed on standard administrative leave pending an investigation.
