People who live in the neighborhood said the boy was hit by bullet fragments. He was taken to the hospital; he is okay and has been released. Neighbors also said a young man was shot and they believe that he died, but police have not confirmed this yet.

This all happened when somebody reported that they heard shots fire at 26th Street near Market Street. One witness said they saw a silver car driving away from the scene.

"We appeal to the citizens of Oakland, anybody, who saw anything, whether living in this area, or who may have been driving by, please call us so that we can take the person into custody who is responsible for this and take guns off the street," said Oakland Police Sgt. Blair Alexander.

Police believe at least one handgun was used in the shooting.

Detectives are hoping they can learn more by looking at surveillance cameras that were place nearby Market at a high school.
