A correctional deputy discovered Jose Carrillo-Sanchez unresponsive and hanging from a sheet tied to the upper bunk bed in his cell at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, sheriff's Sgt. Debra Barry said.

Paramedics responded and attempted to revive Carrillo-Sanchez, but he was pronounced dead just after midnight.

Carrillo-Sanchez had been arrested Sept. 19 on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism. He was also in custody for an immigration hold, Barry said.

He did not have a cellmate, and there were no initial signs of foul play, according to Barry.

The cause of death is pending autopsy results.
