Lost ship container found, Oakland Estuary reopened

OAKLAND, CA

At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the Coast Guard received a report that an empty container fell off of the container ship Sun Right. It sank near the entrance to the estuary.

The vessel Sun Right was at the Ben E. Nutter Marine Container Terminal in Oakland when a crane knocked the container into the water, according to the Coast Guard.

Authorities closed the shipping channel to deep-hulled vessels as a precaution while divers searched for the container.

It was eventually spotted about 200 yards off of berth 38, and the estuary entrance was reopened at about 11:30 a.m.

The container is scheduled to be removed from the estuary Monday, according to the Coast Guard.
