Nurses at Stanford Hospital and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital have rejected a contract the hospitals called their "last, best and final offer."

The nurses' current contract expired on Wednesday and the two sides have not been able to reach an agreement despite dozens of rounds of negotiations.

Wednesday, about 90 percent of nurses voted to reject the latest proposal.

The hospitals have said they are prepared to bring in temporary nurses if the union decides to strike.
