A Peninsula 4th grader's creative efforts to raise money to save teachers' jobs have paid off in a huge way.

Julia Qiao had hoped to raise $500 when she sent out a birthday party invitation to friends, asking them not to buy her a present, and instead donate to the foundation for Belmont-Redwood Shores schools.

The district has a $3 million deficit next year, and two dozen full-time teachers have been pinkslipped.

Julia has collected $4,700. That includes friends' donations plus matching funds from businesses.
