Ordinance would relieve SFPD of crime lab

San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi introduced an ordinance Tuesday that would take the city's crime lab out of the hands of its police department.

The ordinance would require the city administrator's office take over the lab at first. Eventually, the crime lab could be restructured so it had no direct ties to another city agency or it could even be contracted out to a regional lab down the road.

The crime lab was shut down last month after one of its technicians admitted to stealing cocaine evidence.
