Shortly after 1:35 a.m., deputies made a traffic stop on a 2009 Nissan Cube that did not have its lights on while traveling on Constitution Boulevard, according to the sheriff's office.
The vehicle pulled over and deputies talked to the teen driver. Deputies smelled alcohol, and when they ordered the teen out of the car, he allegedly put the vehicle in drive and sped off.
A short pursuit, which sheriff's deputies made with the assistance of Salinas police, ensued until the vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant near the intersection of Beacon Hill Way and Bristol Circle. The fire hydrant broke, and water gushed about 100 feet into the air, according to the sheriff's office.
The driver fled from the car and tried to jump over fences in the residential neighborhood. He was eventually shot with a Taser stun gun and taken into custody, according to the sheriff's office.
Four juvenile girls were also in the vehicle, and one was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
The driver of the vehicle was also taken to a local hospital for the Taser wound before being booked into juvenile hall. He had also been on probation for gang terms, according to the sheriff's office.
