Myung Lee, 67, was diving for abalone off of Greenwood Beach in the area of Elk when a friend who had accompanied him on the trip lost sight of him. After searching, the friend went to a nearby store to get help, according to the sheriff's office.
Elk volunteer fire department personnel organized a rescue effort and eventually found Lee unconscious and not breathing. Paramedics performed CPR, but could not revive him.
Lee was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies were called to the scene at around 11 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.
