MTC approves $5M for Golden Gate bridge suicide barrier

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission has approved $5 million in funding to help pay for design work on the Golden Gate Bridge suicide barrier.

It is expected to take 18 months to finish the design.

The plan calls for a metal net that would partially collapse, if someone jumped into it.

Similar nets have been very successful at known suicide locations in Europe.

The bridge district says it will need state, federal, or private money to pay for the $45 million barrier.
