Firefighter Dave Manzek was lowered into the canal after a car carrying 75-year-old Janet Hogan, her husband, and son veered into it during a rain storm. He suffered injuries including a dislocated shoulder, but managed to drag Hogan to shore.
"It put me underwater pretty deep, but that's where she was churning 'round, 'round and 'round, and that's when her head hit my knee and then I was able to kick her back out onto a rock," said Manzek.
The accident began when Hogan's son, who was driving, apparently suffered a seizure. He and his father died in the crash.
