Woman killed after jump from burning apartment

SAN FRANCISCO

The fire was started on the eighth floor of 888 O'Farrell St. between Polk and Larkin streets at 5:28 a.m., San Francisco police Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said. Fire officials believe the two-alarm fire started on a mattress in an apartment on that floor.

A woman appears to have jumped from the burning apartment during the fire, Dangerfield confirmed. She hit a street-level tree during the fall and was killed.

The woman had not been identified as of 2:30 p.m.

A man in the apartment was burned and taken to a hospital in serious condition. He was expected to survive, Dangerfield said.

About six engines and three trucks were dispatched to the fire, a fire department dispatcher said, which was contained at 5:43 a.m.

The case remains under investigation.
