West Portal Muni rail project nears completion

SAN FRANCISCO

The St. Francis Circle at the intersection of Portola Drive and Sloat, Junipero Serra and St. Francis boulevards is getting a makeover for the K-Ingleside and M-Ocean View San Francisco Municipal Railway lines, to include new boarding islands, customer platforms and 3,000 feet of new rail tracks.

Other improvements are new train and traffic signals and an updated storm sewer system, according to the SFTMA, which operates Muni.

The project is expected to be completed Saturday, which will coincide with a number of Muni service restorations in various parts of the city.

The changes restore 61 percent of the service cuts the SFMTA was forced to make in May, amid a budget crunch.

SFMTA officials said today they're working on a plan to restore all the cuts by Dec. 1.
