Johnson, 51, was traveling east on Hicks Road, west of Alamitos Road, when he lost control of his bicycle at about 2:05 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
He was thrown over the front of the bicycle and his head struck the pavement.
Johnson was not going particularly fast and he was wearing a helmet, CHP officials said.
