Most people wait until a month out to book travel plans, but Fare Compare's CEO says the competition for seats will be tight due to high demand this year from the higher than normal number of people last year who chose to stay home.

On top of that, warns capacity on most flights is down 12 to 15 percent, but the worst news is fares are 20 to 30 percent above last year's rates.

So expect to have to spend a lot of time to find the best fares and those that wait may be out of luck.
