Crews responded to a report of a 6-inch gas line rupture in downtown Orinda at about 11:20 p.m., fire officials said.
Fourteen homes were evacuated while fire and utility crews secured the area.
The evacuation was lifted after about an hour and a half when it was determined that the gas leak was from a 2-inch pipe and did not pose a danger to residents, fire officials said.
A portion of Moraga Way between Camino Pablo and Brookwood Road remained closed as of 5:30 a.m., affecting 17 businesses, officials said.
No injuries were reported.
Work to complete final repairs to the gas line was continuing this morning.
