U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Wednesday that Aspire Public Schools is one of 12 charter school management organizations that will receive $50 million in grants.
Aspire is the only California group among the grant recipients.
The nonprofit organization currently operates 30 charter schools serving nearly 10,000 mostly low-income students in California.
Aspire officials says the new grant will allow the organization to serve an additional 4,500 students.
Last week, Aspire Public Schools received a $1 million grant from Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network.
