The White House says President Obama supports recent attempts by the Afghan government to negotiate peace with Taliban insurgents.

However, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs reiterated that Taliban leaders must first renounce the use of violence and their support for Al-Qaida.

A Washington Post report out says: "Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai's government has made contact with senior Taliban officials based in Pakistan."

Gibbs says the president supports a reconciliation process, but it's up to afghan leaders to decide with whom to reconcile.
