A Sacramento County man convicted of shooting a sea lion in the Sacramento River is beginning his sentence of 30 days in jail and five years probation.

The sea lion, known as "Sgt. Nevis," is doing well now. He is recovering from surgery at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom where he will live out the rest of his life.

Larry Allen Legans of North Highlands was convicted of shooting the sea lion last November near the town of Verona in Sutter County. He has also been ordered to pay $51,000 in restitution.
