Suspicious package deemed harmless

SAN FRANCISCO

A bomb squad responded to a 12:42 p.m. report that a suspicious piece of luggage had been spotted outdoors near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Irving Street, police spokeswoman Lt. Lyn Tomioka said.

After an investigation, the squad found only clothing and personal items in the luggage. They did not find the owner, Tomioka said.

Police closed off Irving Street from 17th Avenue to 19th Avenue, and shut down 18th Avenue from Lincoln Street to Judah Street during the investigation, Tomioka said.

The Sunset District branch of the San Francisco Public Library was evacuated, she said.

The library and all streets were reopened as of about 2:40 p.m., Tomioka said. uReport:
