'Turfin' dance style sparks a movement

OAKLAND, Calif.

Turf Feinz began with one dance, a tribute to Darrell Armstead's brother who had been killed in a traffic accident. It has since accumulated more than a million hits on YouTube.

Turfin, a dance style that incorporates moves from hip hop, ballet, reggae and contemporary has gone global. The Turf Feinz have befriended Les Twins, a duo from France, where the style is considered experimental.

Dance truly is an international language and it is inspiring a new generation. Dancers as young as 5 are now participating in the movement.

For Oakland's Turf Feinz, the video is a turning point and a chance for a bright future. They are looking for a sponsor and the opportunity to show the world turfin.

The World of Dance competition is Saturday, Nov. 13 from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Solano County Fairgrounds at 900 Fairgrounds Drive in Vallejo.
