The bill would give the Food and Drug Administration sweeping new powers to demand recalls. It would also require any food importer to certify that the food they are bringing into the country is safe.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says tainted food is responsible for 3,000 deaths and as many as 48 million cases of illness every year.
