It happened at 3:30 p.m. behind Kennedy High School on the 700 block of South 45th Street.
Investigators say a man in his 30s died when someone walked up and fired several rounds into his white Cadillac. Police believe he may have been targeted in the attack.
It is the second murder in Richmond this year, compared with eight at the same time last year.
