Caltrain working on fix to balance budget

Transportation officials say they are working on a short term plan that would balance Caltrain's budget without making massive service cuts.

Caltrain had previously warned it would have to dramatically cut service to close a $30 million budget gap. Proposals included cancelling all non-peak service, and halting all trains south of San Jose.

Yesterday, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission executive director he is meeting with Caltrain as well Muni, SamTrans, and the VTA to find a funding plan that will finance Caltrain until the 2012 election. However, he warns Caltrain will still have to make some smaller cuts.
