What does the Golden Gate Bridge sound like?

MARIN, Calif.

That's what the Marin Symphony Orchestra hopes to find out. They have commissioned a musical composition that will incorporate the public's opinion of the sounds of the bridge. Composer Rob Kapilow will write the work.

They are taking suggestions on the Golden Gate Opus Facebook page, and a sound location expert is recording dozens of sounds associated with the bridge -- from cars to fog horns, to bicycle bells, to car tires hitting grates on the bridge.

Members of the student orchestra have already improvised some melodies that sound like the bridge with the composer.

The work has not been written yet but it will premiere next year to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the bridge. Seventy-five community events will be held, but there will be no walk across the bridge.
