San Jose city officials are hoping to save $10 million by replacing police officers who currently patrol Mineta San Jose International Airport with Santa Clara County sheriffs' deputies.

Our media partner, The San Jose Mercury News, reports that city officials plan to negotiate with the sheriff on a tentative contract that could be voted on by the City Council at the end of this month. They also want to hire a less expensive private company to replace city firefighters stationed at the airport.

Police and firefighter unions argue that replacing officers and firefighters is a risky experiment.
