A breakthrough study on estrogen-only hormone therapy will likely come as a relief to millions of women.

The study, from the Women's Health Initiative, shows the increased risk of stroke among women who take the hormones disappear after they stop taking the pills. In addition, concerns about breast cancer and heart attacks are largely unfounded for those who take the hormone for a short time.

The study applies only to women over 50 who have had hysterectomies.
