Shoppers in parts of Santa Clara County will soon have to bring their own bags. The Board of Supervisors has approved a ban on plastic carryout bags.

The measure will apply to 56 retailers in unincorporated areas of the county. Restaurants and non-profits are exempt from the ban.

The law's supporters say it will encourage people to switch to reusable bags.

Businesses will still be allowed to use plastic bags for items including fresh produce, prepared foods and prescription drugs.
