USDA replaces food pyramid with plate

WASHIGNTON

The "My Plate" is the new USDA symbol designed to encourage children to eat healthier. The plate is divided into four sections that contain fruit, vegetables, protein and grains, with a glass representing dairy products to the right of the plate.

First Lady Michelle Obama was on hand to unveil the plate Thursday. The First Lady said nutrition doesn't have to be complicated.

The USDA decided to retire the plate, which has been in use since 1992, claiming it was "complex and confusing." They said the old plate tried to put too many nutrition facts out at once.

The new plate encourages people to enjoy their food but eat less of it and to avoid oversized portions.
