A 22-year-old man who died Saturday morning when his vehicle went off a connector ramp in San Jose and hit a support pillar has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as Jordan Campbell.

Campbell, a San Jose resident, was driving at a high rate of speed on the southbound Interstate Highway 280 transition ramp to state Highway 87 when his Toyota Scion went off the roadway's eastern edge at about 5:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Toyota hit the guardrail and became airborne, crashing into a support pillar and then traveling back into traffic lanes on the ramp before coming to rest its side.

Campbell was wearing a seatbelt but died instantly when the car hit the pillar, CHP officials said.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.
