Police investigate triple murder in Richmond

Whatever happened inside the two bedroom unit at the Triangle Court housing complex was excessively violent -- a close range gun battle involving three men, numerous shots and more than a few weapons.

Residents who have seen their fair share of crime were taken aback.

"It's crazy," said resident Nekeila Turner. "I'm tired of it, I'm sick of it."

Police say Michael L. Anderson, 36, was among those who was murdered on Saturday, along with 19-year-old Dante Deloney of Oakland and a 28-year-old man from San Leandro. Both men stopped by Anderson's home for unknown reasons.

"We have one person we brought to the station for interrogation and he is cooperating," said Capt. Mark Gagan with the Richmond Police Department. "We're not looking for other suspects. The entire crime scene is in one room of the house."

Police say they found children's bunk beds in one room of the home, but no children were home at the time.

"I know of a little boy who lives there," Turner said. "My son has played with him on a couple of occasions."

Richmond's Iron Triangle neighborhood has endured violent crime over the years. Just outside the apartment where the triple homicide took place is evidence of suspected drug use and a bullet shell casing that wasn't connected to Saturday's crime.

Police say they're frustrated by the latest incident because things seemed to be improving.

"It really does have a sense of community," Gagan said. "The lighting is better; the aesthetics are better. The tenants are no longer able to be involved in criminal activity, and we have seen a reduction in violent crimes."

Gagan said when a shooting like the one that took place on Saturday happens, it's their job to figure out why.

Meanwhile, Turner said she doesn't feel like her neighborhood has gotten any safer.

"It happened here, and I want to move," Turner said. "I just secure my area, my place of living, that's about it. My son wasn't outside, thank God."

Police are still trying to come up with a motive. As of Sunday morning, they had not released the name of the victim from San Leandro.
