San Jose non-profit cancels summer camps

Financial problems forced the Diabetes Society to cancel several summer camps, like one held at the YMCA camp in Boulder Creek.

The Diabetes Society e-mailed parents about the cancelation on June 24, after many of them already paid up to $700.

A lack of funding forced the non-profit to shut down.

"My main concern is for these kids that if they can't get it through the Diabetes Society, I hope they can get this experience through another organization or maybe through something that can be started for next summer," said former Diabetes Society camp director Molly Underwood.

The Diabetes Society says donations helped pay for the camp costs, and those donations have dried up.

The non-profit says it is working with other groups to try to transfer the camps.

Meanwhile, a lawyer is helping some of the families recoup the camp fees.
