Johntue Caldwell, 25, was with Grant on New Year's Day in 2009 when Grant was fatally shot by former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle. Friday, Caldwell was shot to death as he was sitting in his Cadillac.
Police say somebody walked up to the 76 gas station on West Tennyson in Hayward, opened fire and then ran away. Investigators don't have a motive yet, but they say the shooting was not random.
Those who knew Caldwell showed up to a memorial at the gas station shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday to pay their respects at the spot where the man was killed.
"It's shocking," said David Frausto. "It happened in broad daylight, which is real crazy too. It's just dumb."
Caldwell had a $5 million lawsuit pending against BART claiming he was mistreated by another BART officer the same day Grant was shot dead. An attorney for BART said Caldwell's death effectively ends his lawsuit against them, and it's unclear if any relatives can pick up where Caldwell left off.
Caldwell, who was the godfather of Grant's seven-year-old daughter, leaves behind two sons.
