DMV: Handicapped placards mailed to dead people

Nearly 60,000 of California's two million disabled parking placards may have been sent to dead people, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Los Angeles Times reports the DMV checks state death records every two years, and it misses many of those people because of mismatched birth dates.

The DMV says one-third of the placards are being used illegally. The agency says it's trying to make the process more efficient.
