The Commerce Department report finds that women make up half of the U.S. workforce but hold fewer than one-quarter of positions in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, also known as STEM jobs. And while 40 percent of men with technical degrees enter the STEM workforce, only 26 percent of their female counterparts chose a STEM career.
The report suggests women may steer towards other careers due to family obligations, gender stereotypes and few role models.
