Two dead in Oakland fire may have been assaulted

OAKLAND, Calif.

The bodies, believed to be a man and a woman, were found on the second floor living quarters of a building shortly after Sunday's 1:05 a.m. fire was reported. The two-story building has an acupuncture clinic on the first floor. Homicide Sgt. Jim Rullamas tells the San Francisco Chronicle that witnesses saw someone fleeing the home, possibly with gas cans or other fire-starting devices. The sergeant says the victims may have been assaulted before the apartment was torched. The Alameda County coroner's office will determine the cause of death. No names are available.
