About 2,000 San Francisco middle and high school students were turned away from class because they couldn't prove they'd had a whooping cough shot.

A new state law requires all children in grades 7 through 12 to have the vaccine by the first day of school. It follows a spike in the number of whooping cough cases in California last year.

Officials told the students to get the paperwork from their medical provider or report to a free vaccination clinic at the school district's central office for a shot.
