Local members of Japanese-American Army unit honored

MORGAN HILL, Calif.

Eighty-eight-year-old Lawson Sakai of Morgan Hill is a veteran of the Army's 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Surviving members of that unit, along with the 100th Battalion and the Military Intelligence Service, will receive the Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday. It is the country's highest civilian honor.

The all Japanese-American Army units are among the most decorated in U.S. military history.

Many of them fought in Italy, France and Germany even while their families were held in internment camps back home.
