Nine Bay Area hospitals are affected, but more than half the nurses work at Alta Bates and Summit Medical Centers in Berkeley and Oakland. Hundreds of replacement nurses have been hired and hospital management pledges to lock out nurses who strike.
Sutter Health nurses were locked out for five days in September after holding a similar one-day strike. One patient died after being treated by a replacement nurse during that walkout.
