FDA fines Red Cross $9.6M for blood safety lapses

It comes after federal inspectors reported finding hundreds of blood safety violations across the country. The violations include ineffective donor screening and failure to add new donors with infected blood to the national list of deferred donors.

The FDA says the violations are serious, but, it did not compromise the nation's blood supply. The Red Cross says it's already taken steps to address the FDA's concerns.
