A Bay Area mother and son have achieved a remarkable consensus in the Middle East on the subject of landmines, getting Israelis and Palestinians to agree to remove nearly 1.5 million landmines.

Heidi Kuhn and her 16-year-old son Christian are with Roots of Peace, a non-profit which raises awareness about landmines. They held a news conference at Marin TV in San Rafael Thursday and Skyped with Palestinians and Israelis to talk about this first-ever agreement.

They also announced a youth initiative using social media. "We want to engage young people in Israel, Palestine and America to get involved to raise awareness," Christian said.

The San Rafael-based Roots of Peace organization will lead the de-mining project in the spring with funding from Napa Valley vintners.
