UC Berkeley police clear Occupy Cal camp

A few messages written in chalk are all that remain of the week-old Occupy camp erected on the steps of Doe Library.

For a week, campus police had been warning protesters that their tents violated campus rules and needed to be removed.

At 5:30 Friday morning police moved in and moved the protesters out. In total, six students and 11 non-students left without incident.

The non-students were issued stay-away orders.

"They chose not to vacate on their own accord and at this point it seemed to be growing and it was time to end the occupation," UC Berkeley spokesperson Claire Holmes said.

The new tent city was erected last week to mark the three-month anniversary of the first Occupy Cal encampment.

Occupy protesters said they're planning to hold a rally on campus Friday afternoon.
